ONE VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

If there is one enduring lesson the presidential election of 2000 should have taught us, it’s that every vote is important. With the presidency hanging on election results in Florida, George Bush and Al Gore ended up separated in that state by just a few hundred votes out of nearly 6 million cast.

An exception? No. History is full of instances proving the enormous power of a single vote:

  • John F.  Kennedy's margin of victory over Richard Nixon in 1960 was less than one vote per precinct..
  • Marcus Monton was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1839 by one vote out of 102,066 cast.
  • In 1996 Ron Wyden won election to the U.S. Senate from Oregon to replace former Senator Robert Packwood. He won by one percent of the vote.
  • One vote gave statehood to Texas (1845), California (1850), Oregon (1859), Washington (1889), and Idaho (1890).
  • One vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment in 1868.
  • One vote elected Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency in 1876, and the man in the Electoral College who cast that vote was an Indiana Congressman elected by one vote.
  • In 1950, a State Senator from Garrett County, Maryland was elected by one vote. The winner had 3,080. The loser, 3,079.
  • One vote kept Aaron Burr from becoming President. That one vote elected Thomas Jefferson in 1800.
  • Women won the right to vote in 1920 by passage of the 19th amendment to the Constitution. Tennessee, the last state needed to pass the amendment, ratified the amendment by one vote.
  • In the 1974 New Hampshire Senatorial race, Louis Wyman appeared to be the winner by 542 votes. But after a recount, John Durkin was certified the winner by 10 votes. Still later, the decision was reversed and Wyman was declared the winner by two votes. After a year of court battles and controversy, a special election was held and Durkin won.
  • In 1923, one vote made Adolph Hitler head of the Nazi party.
  • Woodrow Wilson was elected President in 1916 by carrying one state by less than one vote per precinct.
  • In 1978, a tie vote in a race for the Pennsylvania Legislature resulted in neither party having a majority. A recount broke the tie and gave control of the House to the Democrats.

On election day, it’s easy to let a busy schedule keep you from voting. It’s easy to think that one vote won’t make a difference. It does, though. On election day, the vote you cast, or the vote you don't cast, will mean the difference between having a Democratic President or 4 more years of the dreaded Bush!  You decide...

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT ?
Be proud of what it really means to be LIBERAL !!!

    1. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
    2. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
    3. Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.
    4. Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.
    1. Tending to give freely; generous:  a liberal benefactor.
    2. Generous in amount; ample:  a liberal serving of potatoes.

  1. Not strict or literal; loose or approximate:  a liberal translation.

  2. Of, relating to, or based on the traditional arts and sciences of a college or university curriculum:  a liberal education.
    1. Archaic. Permissible or appropriate for a person of free birth; befitting a lady or gentleman.
    2. Obsolete. Morally unrestrained; licentious.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines the word liberal this way:  "Not narrow or contracted in mind; not selfish" and "not bound by orthodox tenets or established forms in political or religious phiosophy; independent in opinion; not conservative; friendly to great freedom in the institution or administration of government...."  Liberal is also defined as generous, and "implies largeness of spirit in giving, judging, acting, etc."
-- Michael Moore in Dude, Where's My Country?

"What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."   -- President John F. Kennedy
